Having been to Cambridge twice before, i wanted to compare Oxford and see how it measures up. I had heard that Oxford was not as pretty as Cambridge and my trip there confirmed that. Oxford was just another town. There was nothing special about it. Christ Church college didn't seem quite as majestic and as stately as Trinity although i must admit the Christ Church meadows were great.
And so Josh, Gurjoth, Wei wei and myself headed on a train to Oxford. The return trip cost a pretty decent 9 pounds.
#1 - there was a cemetery in the middle of town o.O
#2 - the shopping street, cornmarket
#3 - we went to the Covered market and in there was a shop selling speciality cakes which were really beautiful
#4
#5
#6 - i'm guessing these were wedding cakes
#7 - check out the animal carcass hanging on the door frame
#8 - we ate pastries for lunch. I had a pasty which was, typical of English food, VERY salty. i ate only 3/4 of it. The pasty cost only 1.30gbp, one third the price of the ridiculous Cornish Bakehouse in central london.
#9 - Christ Church college grounds. Out of 25 British Prime Ministers, 12 came from Christ Church. This is (i think) the biggest college in Oxford. We were charged (or rather, milked) 3.90gbp just to enter.
#10
#11
#12 - the college building.
#13
#14 - one of their towers
#15 - courtyard inside the grounds
#16 - gurjoth and wei wei posing at some random fountain. the inscriptions are interesting (:
#17 - a sprawling courtyard
#18 - the dining hall. apparently, harry potter was filmed here. but from what i remember, the harry potter hall was at least three times longer than this! but i do think that this hall is nicer than any other cambridge hall that i've seen
#19
#20
#21
#22 - the Christ Church Chapel
#23
#24
#25
#26
#27 - part of my Methodist heritage originates from here
#28 - we wanted a group photo but neither josh nor myself brought a tripod. so we asked some guy who was carrying a large DSLR to take a photo for us. We expected a photo of decent standards but...this kinda crap shot came out. i will have to crop this subsequently
#29 - and we go to Oxford to...SHOP! By the way, Primark sells stuff that are cheaper than in Singapore. But the only thing i'd buy its t-shirts for is to wipe my floor. The clothes look as though they can only be worn once. But Josh was smart...he just bought a towel, 6 hangers and a laundry bag. no clothes (:
#30 - my customary one in a million photo to prove that i was there
#31 - and for dinner we went to Jamie Oliver's restaurant called Jamie's Italian. Check out the queue. we queued for about 30mins to get in which wasn't too bad
#32
#33 - Gurjoth posing with Jamie Oliver shirts. Josh and Wei Wei both bought one each for 15gbp each
#34 - a closer look at the crowd
#35 - in the queue
#36 - i don't know what they're trying to do...
#37 - oh, there's another photo of me
#38 - what should i eat?
#39 - whilst queuing i was trying to teach gurjoth how to use my camera. this is one of her test shots
#40 - we finally got in after about 30mins
#41 - Prices were NOT cheap. i paid 16gbp for this fish. It would have been reasonable had they given like some salads and chips as sides, but no, they gave nothing. The fish was good, but in form of an insult to the restaurant and Oliver's name, i'd say that Hooked at Rail Mall along upper bukit timah road serves better fish at a lower price and with sides!
#42 - Josh and Gurjoth both had the sirloin steak which was about 16gbp with just a morsel of salad
And so we concluded our Oxford trip. Perhaps we'll head to Wales next. :)
